SACRAMENTO, Calif., March 24, 2022 – Today, Assemblymember Steven Choi, Ph.D. (Vice Chair, Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy Committee) issued the following statement after the California State Assembly failed to suspend the gas tax:

“I am beyond disappointed that the Supermajority Party in Sacramento again refused to drop the price of gasoline by 51 cents per gallon by suspending the state gas tax. The California state budget is overflowing with cash, currently sitting on a $40+ *billion* surplus, while families in my district are struggling to afford gas and groceries.

“Enough is enough. Sacramento Democrats are playing politics with several hypothetical rebate plans that might kick in come July. Californians need relief now – today – and we can provide it by immediately suspending the gas tax. But yet again Sacramento Democrat politicians care more about protecting special interests than providing immediate gas price relief to working families.

“As Joint Author of the bill which would suspend the gas tax, I will not stop fighting to provide direct relief to my constituents and all Californians.”

Assemblyman Steven Choi serves the 68th District in the California Legislature, which includes Lake Forest, Irvine, Orange, North Tustin, Tustin, and Villa Park.
